What does blackwork mean?
Blackwork is less a single style than a way of working: the artist uses black ink only. It includes, for example, graphic and geometric patterns, ornaments, illustrative designs, tribal work and large solid areas. Because of the strong contrast with the skin, blackwork looks clear and powerful. In Berlin, the blackwork tattoo has long been part of the scene – from small symbols to full sleeves.
When solid black makes sense
Large solid black areas – known as packing in the trade – give a design weight and keep it readable from a distance. At the same time, they mean more work on the same patch of skin. That's why we plan solid black deliberately: where does it add impact, and where does bare skin let the design breathe? We'll find that balance for your blackwork tattoo during your consultation with us in Berlin.
Process and session length
A smaller blackwork tattoo is often finished in a single session at our studio in Berlin Mitte. For large-scale pieces, we split the design across several appointments so your skin can heal in between. Many people find filling large areas more intense than pure linework, so short breaks are always possible. Come well rested and with a full stomach, and you'll handle longer sessions much better.
How solid black heals
Large areas of black often take a little longer to heal than fine lines. In the first few days the area may swell more, and after that thin scabs can form. That's normal as long as you keep the skin clean, moisturise it thinly and don't pick at anything. Our aftercare guide explains how to get your blackwork tattoo through healing between work, sport and everyday life in Berlin.
How blackwork ages
Solid black is one of the most durable looks in tattooing, because strong contrast stays readable even as the skin changes. Even so, UV light slowly softens edges over the years. So once your tattoo has healed, protect it with sunscreen – especially large black areas that see a lot of sun, such as the forearm or calf.
Blackwork as a cover-up
Because black covers so well, the style is often a good way to hide an old tattoo. However, not every area needs to be fully black – a well-thought-out design that cleverly integrates old lines is often enough. Find out more on our cover-up tattoos page.
